Spring Sing 2013

The student-run production of the musical Grease.
The Spring Sing, an entirely student-run production (with of course an occasional helping hand from the Performing Arts Department faculty and staff), is an opportunity for students to try something new. Students with no prior experience can stretch themselves on stage or behind it. Those with more stage experience might try their hands at writing, directing, or choreography. And everyone gets to make these stretches together as part of an ensemble that somehow balances these new challenges against the packed schedule of a Thacher spring.

This year, parts were found or created 55 for students as directors Gracie Farese '13 and Kallie O'Connor '13 led their peers in a fun and lively production of the musical Grease. If the cast and crew had as much fun as the audience (as they appear to be doing in the accompanying photos), it was an all around success.

Directing this year's Spring Sing was a completely and unexpectedly rewarding experience. Kallie and I both accepted the responsibility around this time last year without any idea of the kind of chaos that's going on in spring of senior year. There were definitely times when it was hard to schedule all of those rehearsals, but in the end I don't regret a single one. The cast was great, and really devoted (hopelessly devoted...) to the final product. By far the best moment as a director was sitting in the audience on opening night. We were both very nervous and crossing our fingers that everything—the scene changes, the lines, the costumes, the microphones—might by some miracle come together that night to create a great show. Everything did! Everyone's performance was the best we'd seen, and we were both immensely proud to see the show come together like that. — Gracie Farese '13

Everyone, from the cast, to the crew, to the band, put so much effort and time into Grease and for that I am so grateful. Though we had already gone over so many run-throughs and practices, I was still entertained on opening night! I was amazed by the cast's dancing, acting, and singing. That night's show had exceeded all the other run-throughs by far, and by the end of the show, I felt an overwhelming sense of pride for what we had all accomplished. — Kallie O'Connor '13
