Letters to Jackie

Bill Couturié screens his new documentary.
Bill Couturié, father of Caleb '14, screened his soon-to-be-released documentary Letters to Jackie: Remembering President Kennedy last Saturday night for the community. The film, inspired by Ellen Fitzpatrick's book Letters to Jackie: Condolences from a Grieving Nation, documents the major events in the life of President Kennedy through letters written to his wife Jacqueline after his assassination in 1963.

Some 800,000 letters were written to Jackie within seven weeks of her husband's death. With so many to choose from, Couturié selected letters that reflected in some way the narrative of JFK's presidency. Big-name celebrity voices read letters in the film, including: Anne Hathaway, Betty White, Channing Tatum, John Krasinski, Laura Linney, Zooey Deschanel, and several more.

For Thacher students, most of whom were born in the late 90's, this film offered a window into an event, a presidency, and a time period they've only ever seen or heard of from a distance. Many were moved by this well-crafted film, and all left having learned (or remembered) something about the presidency of John F. Kennedy.
