Grandparents Days 2014

Thacher welcomes over 125 grandparents to campus.
Last week, we had 127 special visitors to campus. Grandparents came to the Ojai Valley from all across the country to participate in activities with each other and their grandchildren. In addition to California, these gracious elders hailed from Oregon, Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, Wyoming, Illinois, Oklahoma, West Virginia, Florida, New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey. One international traveler, Ann Marie Harding, grandmother of graduates Mark Whitley CdeP 2010, Emma Whitley CdeP 2013, and current student Isabel Ouweleen '17, joined us from Ontario, Canada!

As the temperature rose to an unusually hot 90 degrees on Wednesday, grandparents intrepidly attended classes, Assembly, gymkhana, and various athletic games. The day prior, Esther and Tom Wachtell (grandparents of Ashley CdeP 2013 and Alexis '15) generously hosted a lovely arrival luncheon in their Ojai home, which was followed by late afternoon tea and talking with Head of School Michael Mulligan in the campus Commons, formal dinner, and a student arts sampler in the Milligan Center for Performing Arts.

Many parents were on hand as well, as volunteer coordinators and visitors. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Chairs of Grandparents Days, parents Susan Toland and Scott LeFevre CdeP 1975 (parents of Charlie CdeP 2012 and Annie '14) and many more who offered assistance, including: Bryan Beckham CdeP 1974 (Annie '14), Pen Callan (Will CdeP 2011 and Peter '16), Jenny Gregory (Anne '15), Charmaine Herzig (Eric '14 and Emma '16), Sofie Howard (Jackson CdeP 2012 and Hayden '16), Jim Jackson (Evan '17 and Ryan '17), Susan Mirbach (Kenlyn '15), Kelly Proctor (Reese '17), Pamela Reiss (Sean Ongley CdeP 2010 and Sasha Ongley '15), Janie Richardson CdeP 1983 (Jack '15 and Sam '17), Kim Robertson (Emma '16), Chitra Sukhu (Morgana Van Peebles '15), and Robin Wilder (Sydney '15).

Students, especially, were the beneficiaries of this event, having the unique opportunity to share their talents and the flow of their daily lives with their families. Serena Warren '16 shared, "My grandparents always have smiles on their faces when they are at Thacher, and I can't blame them!"
