As the first week of school drew to a close, accompanied by the usual hurly-burly of
book purchasing, switching classes, and running to sports tryouts, Thacher’s seniors
hosted the first round of the two club fairs. Dean of Students Sabina McMahon
took the opportunity to introduce freshmen, new sophomores, and returning students
to the many extracurricular opportunities offered on campus.

Last Friday night was devoted to Thacher’s 20 school-sanctioned clubs; a fair for student-run clubs is scheduled for this coming Friday. With tables available on the Pergola, students set up their booths on the front lawn in front of the school building with tablecloths, multi-media, decorations, and plenty of candy and goodies. The Robotics Club showcased their NAO, VEX, and Lego Mindstorm robots as well as a prosthetic hand; the Sir Winston Churchill Debate Society ran a humorous video compilation of Donald Trump in debate; the Tech Club claimed attention with their impressive DJ lights and loud speakers; the Christian Fellowship Club (CFC) welcomed all with their green and orange extravaganza of party décor, homemade cupcakes, freshly-baked cookies, and a grand raffle prize—a towering basket filled with Reese’s Pieces, M & M’s, and Snickers.

Students walked from table to table adding their names to sign-up sheets and
picking up fliers, more gifts, and most importantly, strong impressions of each
organization.

“I thought that all the clubs were very welcoming and encouraging, and they made it
seem really desirable for us to try something new, especially clubs that I didn’t think
about. Also, the food—particularly the cupcakes—were very inviting.”

“I think it is a great way to introduce new students to the school’s various clubs. I
loved all the candy and I especially liked the Christian Fellowship Club’s prize
basket. I also liked how people were not pressured to sign up but the event was just
generally very informative.”
