Nutrition and the Female Athlete: Understanding our physiology to fuel for peak performance

Over the past few decades, the world of sports, both recreationally and professionally, has made significant steps towards equalizing the playing field across the sexes. However, we are still far from complete equality in countless areas, one such being in clear scientific research to optimize female athlete performance. I explore the field of sports nutrition for female athletes, condensing the existing scientific literature into clear, concise recommendations. I review the crucial topics of bone health, iron deficiency, macronutrient balance, menstrual cycle nutrition, relative energy deficiency in sport, and supplementation in regards to nutrition so that all female athletes can apply their physiology to gain a competitive advantage in their sport.
